Efforts in breeding cowpea for aphid resistance: a review

نویسندگان

چکیده

Cowpea is an important food and nutritional security grain legume crop in the semi-arid regions of sub-Saharan Africa. Its production limited by biotic factors including pre-harvest insect pests such as aphids. Aphids cause yield reductions, promotes growth sooty moulds, honeydew a result reduce photosynthetic processes rates. Various methods have been deployed to try control damage aphids cowpea plants. The include use chemical insecticides, cultural, mechanical, biological controls integrated pest management. However, these not very effective smallholder farmers growing marginal areas cannot afford them. Hence, host plant resistance/genetic best method for controlling plantations. Breeding aphid resistance one that can sustain productivity longer periods. Furthermore, assessing presence genetic diversity also help sourcing genes novelty addressing this issue increase crop. Recently, scientists used various strategies solve challenge on cowpea. objective review was document research progresses breeding facilitate conservation germplasm. serves baseline information guide future

Breeding for Salt-Resistance Using Transgressive Segregation in Spring Wheat

Hybrid populations (F3) derived from cross between four moderate salt-resistant spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were assessed for transgressive segregation of salt-tolerant genotypes allowing germination and emergence at 350 mM NaCl for 30 days. The achieved Selection intensity was the order of 0.24-0.27 in these segregation populations (22-25 seedlings from 9000 seeds). Assessment of trans...

A Review of Molecular Makers Applied in Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.) Breeding

In recent years, with the rapid development of molecular biology, molecular markers have been widely used in genetic breeding of various crops including cowpea. However, molecular researches in cowpea are lack of systematic summary. This review presents an overview of accomplishments on different aspects of molecular markers in cowpea genetic breeding, such as genetic diversity analysis, geneti...

Application of myostatin in sheep breeding programs: A review

Myostatin or growth and differentiation factor 8 (GDF8), has been known as the factor causing double muscling phenotypes in which a series of mutations make the myostatin protein inactive, hence disabling it to regulate the deposition of muscle fibre. This phenotype happens with high frequency in a breed of sheep known as the Texel. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) studies show that a portion of t...

Methods of Embryo Sexing in Cattle Breeding: A Review

Different livestock sectors as beef industries get benefit from the production of male animals while dairy industries get benefit from the milk production by the female animals. Therefore, it is obvious need to produce the animals of desired sex which can be achieved by predetermining the sex of conceptus at the time of conception i.e. pre determination of sex may be of great economic importanc...

Genomic Tools in Cowpea Breeding Programs: Status and Perspectives

Cowpea is one of the most important grain legumes in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). It provides strong support to the livelihood of small-scale farmers through its contributions to their nutritional security, income generation and soil fertility enhancement. Worldwide about 6.5 million metric tons of cowpea are produced annually on about 14.5 million hectares. The low productivity of cowpea is attri...
